What Without Warning! Is About
Arnold Laven’s first film, from 1952, is a police procedural set in Los Angeles. Carl Martin, quiet and entirely unremarkable, picks up women who resemble the blonde wife who left him and kills them with a pair of garden shears. The film does not conceal the killer; what it is about is how police with almost nothing to go on close the distance using laboratory work. It is shot in a semi-documentary style with voice-over narration and on real locations around the city, an approach Laven credited to He Walked by Night, on which he had been script supervisor. It was made for under a hundred thousand dollars. Laven spent most of the rest of his career in television.
