What Woman of Straw Is About
Charles Richmond is rich, ill, and cruel to everyone within reach. His nephew Tony devises a route to the fortune: persuade Maria, his uncle's nurse, to marry the old man, then split the inheritance once he dies. The plan works until Maria genuinely attaches herself to the man she was sent to deceive, and her conscience arrives at the worst possible time. Basil Dearden adapts Catherine Arley's 1956 novel, with Gina Lollobrigida as Maria, Sean Connery as Tony and Ralph Richardson as the uncle. It was the first film Connery made after two turns as James Bond, and here he is not the hero but the one doing the arithmetic.
