Gillian Armstrong’s 2015 documentary is about Orry-Kelly, the Australian-born costume designer who dressed more than two hundred and eighty films during Hollywood’s most productive years and won three Academy Awards, among them An American in Paris, Les Girls and Some Like It Hot. Armstrong combines archive footage with interviews and stylised reenactments. The most striking thing in it is that Orry-Kelly, unlike many gay men working in Hollywood then, refused to hide behind an arranged marriage or an invented identity; in his early New York years his room-mate was Archibald Leach, later Cary Grant, who would barely acknowledge that any of it had happened. Armstrong lets that silence stand as part of the portrait.
