World Gone Mad

Zikos works behind the counter of a small grocer's shop. His boss is a puffed-up man who thinks himself an aristocrat, and Zikos cannot stop himself saying what is on his mind every time. The two of them are forever fighting. Then Zikos learns something: the boss, using his money and with the help of the local matchmaker, is preparing to marry a poor girl who lives on the same street. Zikos decides to stop it, and things get thoroughly tangled. Kostas Hatzihristos plays Zikos and was one of the best known comic actors in Greek cinema at the time; for years he carried the type of the provincial man who looks simple and is in fact sharp. Dinos Katsouridis directed. The film is one of the neighbourhood comedies made in great numbers in Greece in the sixties, and it has that mould: a narrow street, curious neighbours, the difference of class, and the order finally coming apart. Ninety-six minutes.
