What Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon Is About
The documentary tells the story of Jack Wrangler, who became the best known name in the adult film industry of the 1970s, first in gay pictures and then in straight ones. Wrangler narrates his own life to the camera, and the warmth and self deprecation of that narration set the tone of the whole film. The most unexpected turn in the story is that a man who had become a hero to a gay public just beginning to be visible fell in love with the celebrated singer Margaret Whiting and built a life with her. Jeffrey Schwarz directed the film, which premiered at the Newfest festival in New York on 7 June 2008. Wrangler died on 7 April 2009, exactly ten months after that premiere.
