Yellow Rose

Diane Paragas's film follows Rose, seventeen, living in a small Texas town. She writes country music and wants to perform; when her mother is detained in an immigration check she is left alone and has to choose between staying and leaving. The idea is that belonging is a matter of documents. Rose has lived there since birth and her music comes out of that culture, but her legal status voids it. The narrative shows this not as a case but as an everyday constraint. Eva Noblezada leads and sings the songs herself. Paragas made the film after years of preparation. The relationship between country music and a young Filipina is the most original element. Who it's for: those who like music-driven drama and narratives about migration. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a story that reaches resolution; the film does not fix the legal situation.
