What Your Turn Is About
When a large number of schools in São Paulo were slated for closure in 2015, students occupied hundreds of public buildings. Eliza Capai’s documentary follows that movement from the first demonstrations in 2013 through to the election of Jair Bolsonaro in 2018. She uses news footage, interviews she conducted herself, and recordings the activists made on their own phones. Three secondary school students narrate, and the way they compete with each other for the floor lets the internal disagreements and the complexity of the movement show. The film won the Amnesty International Film Award at the Berlinale in 2019.
