What Zatoichi and the Chess Expert Is About
Kenji Misumi's 1965 film is among the quieter entries in the Zatoichi series about the blind swordsman. On a ferry crossing, Ichi meets a samurai playing chess; a closeness forms between the two men, but a debt and a revenge hang over it. The effort to save a sick child on the road forms the story's second line. Misumi was one of the best directors on the series, and his interest here is less in fighting than in waiting: long walks, quiet room scenes, the game itself. Ichi's blindness works not as a weakness but as a way of reading people through sound and intention. Shintarō Katsu keeps the lightly mocking tone he sustained across the series. Who it's for: viewers who like Japanese swordplay cinema and the Zatoichi series. Who it's not for: anyone wanting constant action, or hoping to start the series here.
