What A Bell for Adano Is About
Major Joppolo and his men are assigned to restore order in Adano, an Italian town wrecked by the war. He must get supplies into the town without disrupting troop movements while dealing with its particular inhabitants. One of his tasks is to replace the bell that orders the life of the place. The film does not tell the occupying administration as heroism; it shows how small the things are that daily governing consists of. The bell becomes the sign of a town asking for its own life back. The account was adapted from a book. John Hodiak and Gene Tierney appear in Henry King’s hundred and three minute American film, completed in 1945.
