What A Boy Named Charlie Brown Is About
The first Peanuts feature. Charlie Brown fails at everything as usual, then wins the class spelling bee, then the city round, and ends up at the national final. He travels to New York carrying Linus's blanket, which leaves Linus without it. The honest thing about the film is its ending. The logic of the strip holds: winning is not required, and life does not stop because you lost. The next morning Charlie Brown gets out of bed and the day begins. What separates it from the television specials is not length but form. Passages of abstract animation are folded in, and the sequence of Schroeder playing Beethoven works almost as a short film of its own. Its flaw is that there is no ninety minute story here. Some stretches feel padded and several songs slow the whole thing down. Who it is for: readers of Peanuts and lovers of hand drawn animation. Who it is not for: anyone after a fast moving children's film.
