What A Place at the Table Is About
Millions of people in the United States cannot count on enough food. Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush build their documentary not out of figures but out of three lives: a mother raising two children alone in Philadelphia, a fifth-grader in Colorado who cannot concentrate in class because she is hungry, and a child in Mississippi whose health suffers from the cheap calories the family can afford. The film's real argument is that hunger is as much about policy as about poverty. Farm subsidies, school meals, assistance programmes cut and restored: whether food reaches the table is decided largely in those rooms. Jeff Bridges and the chef Tom Colicchio also appear. The documentary imposes no solution but asks plainly why the problem has stayed where it is for so many years.
