A Stand Worthy of Men

Ahmed El Gendy's 2021 Egyptian film follows a group of friends coming together after years to get one of their own out of serious trouble. As the situation grows more complicated they have to travel to a coastal town. The film follows the familiar template of mainstream Egyptian comedy: a crowded cast, fast lines and situational humour. Sayed Ragab and Maged El Kedwany work well together. What makes it interesting is showing friendship between men as an obligation rather than solidarity. Its weakness is a plot that loosens and a final section that is rushed. Who it's for: viewers who like Egyptian popular comedy. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a story outside the template, or who cannot follow the cultural references.
