No Retreat, No Surrender

Ahmed El Gendy's 2010 Egyptian comedy comes from the period of Ahmed Mekky's rise and overdoes its genre mixing on purpose. To bring down a dangerous drug lord, the police install an ordinary man called Hazaloum in place of the kingpin's right hand, Adham, after he is killed. The classic impersonation comedy template is welded to action parody, with the film gesturing at Hollywood action cinema and Egypt's own genre tradition at once. Mekky's comedy runs largely on wordplay and rapid delivery, a layer that disappears for anyone watching with subtitles. He and Donia Samir Ghanem work well together. The weakness is indecision between parody and real action; in some stretches the jokes are dropped for genuine tension and the tone comes apart. Who it's for: viewers curious about late-2000s Egyptian comedy and Ahmed Mekky's work. Who it's not for: anyone who will mind losing the wordplay in subtitles, or who wants a consistent genre experience.
