What A Story of Children and Film Is About
Mark Cousins's 2013 essay film examines how children appear in cinema. Cousins films his niece and nephew, Ben and Laura, while they play, and works out from that recording to fifty-three films from twenty-five countries. He divides it into chapters by states of being, such as shyness, anger, stubbornness and loneliness, bringing scenes from different parts of the world to each. He narrates in his own voice in an essayist's register: personal rather than academic. That it does not stay inside Western cinema is what makes it valuable; the selection is deliberately wide.
