My Name Is Alfred Hitchcock

The documentary looks at the films of Alfred Hitchcock. Mark Cousins made it. Cousins does not take the usual road. He interviews nobody about Hitchcock. Instead he writes a text. He builds the text in Hitchcock’s own voice. An impressionist supplies that voice. The man is Alistair McGowan. So the films are recounted in the director’s own words. The account is divided into six chapters. They are called escape, desire, loneliness, time, fulfilment and height. Each chapter sets scenes side by side under its heading. A filmography spanning more than fifty years is worked through that way. The film was first shown at Telluride in 2022. Mark Cousins directed the hundred and twenty minute British documentary, finished in 2023.
