What A Story Written with Water Is About
Shizuo is about to marry and finds himself split between his fiancée and his mother, and the film refuses to lay that out in a straight line, running dreams, memories and the present over one another instead. Yoshishige Yoshida took the script from a novel by Yojiro Ishizaka. It is generally treated as the break with his studio period: after this comes the run of what were called his anti-melodramas, every one of them starring Mariko Okada and every one of them turning the genre’s habit of making women suffer inside out. Where Ozu holds to a rigid realism, Yoshida works with water, mirrors and memory.
