What Coup d'Etat Is About
Yoshishige Yoshida’s film covers the last days of Ikki Kita, the ultranationalist thinker whose ideas fed the failed military coup of 1936. Rather than reconstruct the events, it looks into the man’s mind: the distance between him and the young officers who acted, the way his words went walking without him, and the fact that he was finally executed as the author of something he never took part in. Yoshida made it after Eros plus Massacre and Heroic Purgatory, closing a loose trilogy on the political past. It was Japan’s Oscar submission that year.
