What Affair in the Snow Is About
Set in a ski hotel up in the mountains, the film is about a woman caught between two men: the volatile, angry man she is with, and the old friend she was once close to without anything ever happening between them. The snow, the hotel and the closed rooms shut the three of them into the same place, and nobody can get away from anybody. Yoshishige Yoshida builds his scenes from unusual angles and at a distance, drawing the feeling not from close ups but from where people stand in relation to one another. Mariko Okada plays the lead in the ninety seven minute Japanese film, completed in 1968.
