What Farewell to the Summer Light Is About
A sudden closeness forms between Kawamura, a Japanese professor travelling through Europe, and Naoko, a married Japanese woman living in Paris who carries the mark of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Crossing the continent together, the two try to understand each other and themselves, and the trip turns into a search. Yoshishige Yoshida’s ninety six minute film was shot in Lisbon, Paris, Madrid, Rome and Scandinavia; the project, co-produced by Japan Airlines, was conceived in part as a travelogue. Mariko Okada and Tadashi Yokouchi star and the music is by Toshi Ichiyanagi. It was released by the Art Theatre Guild on 31 December 1968.
