What Good-for-Nothing Is About
The film follows a group of students drifting through jazz, emptiness and boredom. A young man from a poor family who thinks of himself as good for nothing falls in love with the young secretary who works for his rich friend’s father. She sees something good in him and tries to pull him onto the right road, but what the group starts as a game moves closer and closer to crime and reaches a point of no return. Yoshishige Yoshida’s eighty eight minute Japanese film is the director’s first feature; it neither accuses these young men nor makes excuses for them, and leaves the emptiness as it is. Masahiko Tsugawa and Yusuke Kawazu appear; it was completed in 1960.
