What Faster, Faster Is About
Known in Spanish as Deprisa, deprisa, Faster, Faster is director Carlos Saura's crime drama cast with non professional young people from the streets of Madrid, some of whom were real, heavy drug users; it won the Golden Bear at the 1981 Berlin Film Festival. Cast member José Antonio Valdelomar was arrested for a bank robbery before the film's premiere, cycled in and out of prison afterward, and was found dead of a heroin overdose at Madrid's Carabanchel Prison in November 1992; this remained his only film role. Who it's for: anyone curious about a crime drama cast with real street youth, documenting Spain's lost post Franco generation. Who it's not for: viewers who prefer fictional distance, since the film's reality is only made heavier by what actually happened to its cast afterward.
