El amor brujo

In a Roma village in Andalusia, two fathers promise Candela and José to each other. Years later they marry, but José's eye is elsewhere. In a brawl José is stabbed and dies. Carmelo, who tried to help him, is sent to prison unjustly. When he comes out four years later he tells Candela of the love he has carried since boyhood; but every night Candela goes to the place where José died and dances with his ghost. This is the third film of the flamenco trilogy Carlos Saura made in the eighties, after Bodas de sangre and Carmen. The music is Manuel de Falla's work of the same name. Antonio Gades and Cristina Hoyos take the leads. The story is told almost entirely through dance, and the sets are deliberately kept artificial. It screened out of competition at Cannes in 1986.
