What Elisa, My Life Is About
Elisa has not seen her father Luis for years. A telegram from her sister tells her he is ill, and she travels to the house outside Madrid. The others go home and Elisa stays. Father and daughter talk for the first time in a long while; why Luis left all those years ago comes open slowly. Elisa's own marriage is about to end. Fernando Rey plays the father and Geraldine Chaplin the daughter in Carlos Saura's film. Rey won the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1977 for this part. The telling deliberately mixes what is real with what is remembered: what the father writes, what the daughter sees and the past can stand side by side in the same scene.
