Flamenco Flamenco

The film tells no story. Scenes are set up one after another in a studio, and in each one an artist comes out and performs a form of flamenco: guitar, song, dance, hand-clapping. Among them are Paco de Lucía, Niña Pastori, Miguel Poveda, Eva la Yerbabuena and José Mercé. The camera does not intervene. Carlos Saura's film continues the work he had done on flamenco before. Vittorio Storaro is the cinematographer; he builds the light as though it were shifting through the course of a day, with large painted backdrops behind. The documentary explains nothing and reads no introduction; instead of describing flamenco it shows it. It runs ninety-seven minutes.
