What Fados Is About
The film shows the different faces of fado, the music of Lisbon, through a series of staged performances. Carlos Saura sets the song of the street and the tavern beside the song of the stage, brings fado’s connections with Africa and Brazil into the programme, and presents the form as something still being played rather than shutting it in a museum. Carlos do Carmo, Mariza, Camané, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso and Toni Garrido are among those who perform. The ninety minute Portuguese Spanish co-production was completed in 2007 and is regarded as a continuation of the music films the director made about flamenco and tango, with staging and light, rather than narrative, serving as its language.
