What A Trap for Cinderella Is About
André Cayatte’s 1965 film adapts Sébastien Japrisot’s novel, from a screenplay Cayatte wrote with Jean Anouilh. A young woman survives a terrible fire, has her face rebuilt by surgery, and is treated in a clinic; the body recovers while the memory is gone. She relearns words, ideas and living. The difficulty is that the identity of the survivor is itself in doubt: which of two cousins came out of the fire? Dany Carrel therefore plays more than one part, and the whole tension of the film comes out of that uncertainty rather than out of any investigation. It is counted among the last black-and-white French crime pictures.
