What A Tree of Palme Is About
Palme is a small puppet made so that he can look after Xian, his maker’s ailing wife. When she dies Palme goes still; he comes back to life when a mysterious woman he takes for Xian appears, and he agrees to carry something for her to a distant place called Tama. Along the road he discovers his own feelings and what it means to be human. The story is a loose reading of Pinocchio but not in the register of a fairy tale; it is built on sand, lies and loss, an anime that is not for children. Takashi Nakamura wrote and directed it. It was selected for the Berlin film festival in 2002 and afterwards was largely forgotten.
