What A Walk in the Sun Is About
Salerno, 1943. An American infantry platoon comes ashore in the dark and is told to walk six miles inland in daylight, blow a bridge and clear a farmhouse. That is the whole assignment, and it is the whole film. The walk becomes the story, and what the men say to each other takes the place of events. Lewis Milestone, adapting Harry Brown's novel, fills the picture with waiting, exhaustion and idle talk instead of heroics. The ballad-like narration cutting across it gives the film a strange, almost poetic register. Burgess Meredith narrates.
