A World Not Ours

The documentary is set in a refugee camp in southern Lebanon. The camp is called Ein el-Helweh. Palestinian families live there. The director’s own family comes from it. He was born in the camp and grew up abroad. He returned there every summer. He has home videos spread across years. His father’s footage, his own, and archive material. The documentary brings these together. Three generations appear side by side. A grandfather, a father and grandchildren. Life in the camp is a permanent kind of temporary. People say they do not belong there and yet cannot leave. World Cup matches bring an excitement of their own to the camp. Mahdi Fleifel tells the story of his own family in the ninety three minute documentary, a Danish, Lebanese, Palestinian, Emirati and British production finished in 2014.
