Aadu 2

Midhun Manuel Thomas's 2017 Malayalam film follows Shaji Pappan and the crew introduced in the first film entering another tug-of-war contest. Along the way they become mixed up in a smuggling deal, and the two lines tangle. The first film drew no interest on release; it became a cult through television and the internet, and the sequel was made on that recognition. The humour rests entirely on repeated lines and the strangeness of the characters; for anyone who does not know the series most of the jokes are lost. Jayasurya and Vinayakan work well together. The narrative is loose and no logic is sought. Who it's for: viewers who like Malayalam cult comedy and have seen the first film. Who it's not for: anyone new to the series, or wanting narrative consistency.
