What Aalto Is About
Alvar and Aino Aalto are among the best known names in modern architecture and design. Virpi Suutari's documentary tells the work they built together and the life they built together at the same time, through the buildings and through their correspondence. It does not leave Aino in Alvar's shadow; it presents them as equal partners. The buildings start in Finland and spread outward, and the camera moves through the interiors trying to show what design means in ordinary daily life. It does not push hard against the usual shape of an architecture documentary, but the material is strong and the images are very clean.
