Selena y Los Dinos: A Family's Legacy

Isabel Castro's 2025 documentary tells Selena Quintanilla's story through the years she worked rather than through her death. Its source is the Quintanilla family's own archive: hundreds of hours of home video, tour footage and rehearsal tapes. For years the family played small venues, weddings and local halls with a band made up of their children, and the film does not skip that long apprenticeship, showing that the success did not arrive suddenly. Selena learning Spanish later in life, the condition of belonging fully to neither side as a Mexican American, and the difficulty of being a woman in Tejano music are what the documentary dwells on. Her siblings Suzette and A.B. speak. It won a special jury award for archival storytelling at Sundance. Who it's for: viewers interested in music documentaries and the history of Tejano. Who it's not for: anyone expecting detail about the murder and the trial; the film does not centre it.
