What ABBA: Against the Odds Is About
The documentary starts on the night ABBA won Eurovision and follows the road that took the group to worldwide fame. The condescension of critics, the prejudice against making light music and the breakdown of two marriages all sit inside the same story, and while carrying all of it the group also had to prove it could really play on a stage. The account moves through archive footage and through what the four members say themselves. A group out of Sweden singing in English and going to the top of the world charts was not an ordinary thing in those years, and the documentary keeps that in view. That there are bands playing ABBA songs everywhere in the world today is part of the same story. The film was made for the fiftieth anniversary of that Eurovision win. James Rogan’s ninety four minute documentary was completed in 2024.
