Across the Furious Sea

A father searching for his daughter, who has gone missing in Japan, learns that she has been killed and sets out after whoever did it. The suspect is a young man whose mother will do anything at all to protect him. As the two parents come at each other the investigation moves somewhere else entirely: what the two young people were hiding from their families turns out to weigh more than the killing. Cao Baoping adapted a novel by Lao Huang, and the film moves between China and Tokyo, using the shape of a crime thriller to ask a hard question about parenting and how much of what gets called love is ownership. Huang Bo is the father, Zhou Xun the mother opposite him. It runs one hundred and forty-four minutes and offers no comfort at the end.
