What After Tiller Is About
After Dr George Tiller was assassinated in Kansas in 2009, only four physicians in the United States went on openly performing abortions in the third trimester: LeRoy Carhart, Warren Hern, Susan Robinson and Shelley Sella, all of them colleagues of Tiller. Martha Shane and Lana Wilson follow those doctors, their clinics and the women who come to them. The film’s choice is clear from the start: it does not take a side or argue a case, it looks at people. The doctors’ own hesitations are left inside the frame rather than cut out. It premiered at Sundance in 2013 and won an Emmy in 2015.
