Agak Laen

Four friends run a haunted house at a fairground and the business is failing; nobody is scared. One night a visitor dies of a heart attack and they bury the body in secret. From the next day the haunted house is genuinely frightening and the business explodes. Muhadkly Acho directed. Bene Dion, Boris Bokir, Indra Jegel and Oki Rengga star. All four are members of the podcast group Agak Laen, launched in 2022 and followed by a large audience; the film's humour comes directly out of that show's language. The numbers are the real story. It opened on 1 February 2024 and sold 9.1 million tickets, becoming the most-watched local comedy in Indonesian history and the third most-watched local film of all time. Blending horror and comedy is a strong Indonesian tradition; this film ties that vein to a friendship story and turns markedly toward drama in its second half. A sequel followed. Who it is for: fans of horror comedy and films built on a group of friends. Who it is not for: viewers who will mind the local humour that does not survive translation.
