What Agnes and His Brothers Is About
Three siblings look for happiness in three different places and none of them finds it. Hans-Jorg works in a library and cannot say out loud what he is compelled by. Werner is a successful politician whose household has already collapsed. Agnes dances in a nightclub; as a trans woman she is holding a thin line between her family and her own past. The one thing binding the three of them is the mark the same father left. Oskar Roehler swings between merciless comedy and heavy family drama, and never tries to rescue anyone. The German title refers to Agnes with a masculine pronoun, and the film leaves that contradiction standing on purpose rather than resolving it.
