What AKA Tommy Chong Is About
Tommy Chong became the target of a federal investigation for selling bongs over the internet; the operation was called Pipe Dreams and it ended in a nine month prison sentence. Josh Gilbert’s documentary follows the whole sequence, from the raid through the court to the cell. Chong was the only defendant in the case with no prior conviction who was sent to prison, and part of the government’s stated reasoning was that Up in Smoke had trivialised its own anti-drug campaigns. Cheech Marin, Jay Leno, Bill Maher, Lou Adler and Peter Coyote are among those who speak. The film premiered at Toronto and won audience awards at San Francisco and Vancouver and a jury prize for best documentary at Aspen.
