What Alambrista! Is About
After the birth of his first child, Roberto, a young Mexican man, slips across the border. Looking for work to send money home to his family, he learns that working hard is not enough: the days in the fields, the wages that never arrive, the raid that could come at any moment. Robert M. Young shot it with documentary realism and put the life of undocumented workers on screen in American fiction for the first time from their own point of view. It won the first Camera d’Or at Cannes and best film at San Sebastian the same year.
