What Triumph of the Spirit Is About
Salamo Arouch is a young Jewish dockworker and boxer in Salonika. When the Germans occupy the city and deport its Jewish population to Auschwitz, Arouch finds that the only way to stay alive in the camp is in the ring, fighting other prisoners for the amusement of the officers. What happened to the man who lost was not a mystery to anyone. Robert M. Young's film was the first feature shot on location at Auschwitz, with Arouch himself on set as a technical adviser and Willem Dafoe playing him. After release, another boxer from Salonika, Jacko Razon, sued, claiming the story was his and that Arouch had exaggerated his record; the case ended in 1995 with a payment from the production.
