What Saving Grace Is About

A new pope has been elected. The name he takes is Leo. He is still getting used to the office. One day he ends up outside the Vatican. The door has closed behind him. Nobody recognises him. Outside he cannot explain who he is. The road takes him to a poor Italian village. Things are in a bad way there. People have fallen out and there is no hope left. The pope lives among them as an ordinary man. Without saying who he is, he starts to help. The villagers know him as a stranger. The time there teaches him something too. Tom Conti and Fernando Rey appear in the hundred and twelve minute film, an American production Robert M. Young finished in 1986.
