Albert Nobbs (2011): Plot, Cast & Where to Watch

Name: Albert Nobbs
Genre: Drama
Released: 2011
Duration: 113 min
Cast: Glenn Close, Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Janet McTeer, Pauline Collins

What Albert Nobbs Is About

A quiet waiter working at a Dublin hotel in the nineteenth century has lived as a man for thirty years, saving to open a small shop. The film treats this not as a story about a secret but as a strategy for survival: a woman could not hold a business of her own at the time. The narrative makes meeting another person living the same way its turning point, and shows two different outcomes. Rodrigo Garcia directed. Glenn Close had played the part on stage thirty years earlier and pursued the production for years; she and Janet McTeer were both nominated for Academy Awards. Before watching: the film does not name the character's identity in present-day terms, and that ambiguity was argued over. The ending is also unsparingly sad.
