What All Around Us Is About

Kanao, who draws courtroom sketches for a living, watches the crimes, the scandals and the unravelling of a society pass in front of him without passing judgement on any of it. He and his wife carry the death of their first child; her withdrawal stretches over years, and recovery comes not at a turning point but through patience. Ryosuke Hashiguchi’s hundred and forty minute Japanese film was his first in seven years, and it treats depression not as a diagnosis but as something lived inside a life. Lily Franky and Tae Kimura take the leads; Kimura was nominated as best actress at the Japan Academy Prize and Hashiguchi was named best director at the Hochi Film Awards. It opened on 7 June 2008.
