Always: Sunset on Third Street '64

Tokyo, 1964. The city is preparing for the Olympics and the neighbourhood is changing: new buildings, new roads, televisions. Chagawa is married now and a father, but his writing career is sinking; the Suzuki family's repair shop has grown and so have their children. The film is not interested in nostalgia. It is interested in the price of development: as the neighbourhood grows richer the people drift apart, and the film says so by having motorways take the place once held by Tokyo Tower. The form again rests on digital reconstruction: the Tokyo of the sixties, the Olympic preparations and the streets of the period are rebuilt by computer. Takashi Yamazaki both directs and runs the effects. This is the third and last film of the series and was also released in 3-D. The same cast returned: Hidetaka Yoshioka and Shinichi Tsutsumi. Who it is for: viewers who followed the series and like Japanese period melodrama. Who it is not for: newcomers. The film leans on the emotional accumulation of the two before it and loses half its effect on its own.
