What An American in Paris: The Musical Is About
Paris, after the end of the Second World War. The American soldier Jerry Mulligan stays in the city because of a young woman he falls in love with at first sight. A stranger there, he comes to know the pianist Adam Hochberg, who is devoted to the same woman without Jerry knowing it. The two have to work together on a ballet with her, and she is promised to Henri Baurel, who also comes to know Jerry and Adam. The film is the record of a stage musical, with dance and song at the centre of the account. It uses postwar Paris not as decor but as a place where everyone is trying to begin again. Robert Fairchild appears in the hundred and fifty five minute production by Christopher Wheeldon and Ross MacGibbon, completed in 2018.
