What An Enemy of the People Is About
A small town is getting ready to draw tourists with its hot springs when the town doctor, Dr Stockmann, finds that the water has been contaminated by the runoff from the tannery and is making people ill. He wants to make it public, but the leading men of the town tell him that cleaning it up would cost far too much and that the news would finish the place, and they expect him to keep quiet. His brother, the newspapermen, his neighbours and in the end the whole town turn against him; being right does not save him from being alone. George Schaefer’s hundred and seven minute American film was adapted from Henrik Ibsen’s play, with Steve McQueen as Stockmann, far outside his usual parts; it was completed in 1978.
