Motherland Hotel

Zebercet is the clerk of a hotel in a provincial town, a converted old mansion with few guests. His days are identical: he keeps the register, does the rooms, sleeps with the cleaning woman, turns the radio on in the evening. One day a woman arrives off the Ankara train, stays a single night, and leaves saying she will be back in a week. Zebercet gives that room to nobody. The longer he waits the more the days run together, then the hours, then who he is. By the time the waiting ends there is no man left. Ömer Kavur directs, adapting Yusuf Atılgan's novel. A hundred and one minutes, with Macit Koper as Zebercet. It took the FIPRESCI prize at Venice in 1987 and the Golden Orange at Antalya. It is among the most discussed adaptations in Turkish cinema.
