A Broken Love Story

Fuat is a doctor. His family is in difficulty and in debt; as a remedy he is married to the daughter of a wealthy family. The marriage does not work from the start. He goes to a provincial town and begins working there. In the town there is a teacher named Aysel. The two meet. Aysel makes her own decisions, does not meet the town's expectations, and pays for it. Fuat can neither end his marriage nor stay there. Ömer Kavur directs. Kadir İnanır, Hümeyra and Halil Ergün are in the cast. The film is among Kavur's works of the eighties and belongs to the line in Turkish cinema of that period in which provincial narratives came forward. The matter it works at is class and obligation; Fuat decides almost nothing about his own life himself. The teacher played by Hümeyra is its soundest side, written as more independent than the women's parts of the period. The town is built in detail; social pressure is shown directly and nobody speaks openly. Kavur's visual work is calm; long takes and little music. The narrative offers no romantic resolution and the film answers its title directly. Who it is for: viewers who like eighties Turkish cinema and Kavur's work. Who it is not for: the pace is slow, the register bleak, and the technical quality carries the limits of its time.
