What Animal Love Is About
The documentary looks at the relationships lonely people form with their animals in a city where hundreds of thousands live on top of one another. For people who have given up on their own kind, dogs and other pets become companions, life partners, something to hold and bedfellows, and the film shows these people inside their homes, in their most private moments, with nothing softened. Ulrich Seidl’s hundred and fourteen minute Austrian production uses the orderly frames and static shots he is known for; the images are composed like paintings while the life inside them is left exactly as it is. It was completed in 1996 and was argued over wherever it was shown for how uncomfortable it is.
