What Jesus, You Know Is About
The documentary watches six Catholics in Austria at prayer in their churches. The camera stays still, nobody interrupts, and the people tell Jesus their own troubles: a husband whose wife is unfaithful, a woman worn down by her family, a young man who cannot carry his loneliness. As the prayers go on, the words turn from petition into confession and from there into complaint, and the daily life of each person comes out in full detail. The film neither mocks the believers nor defends them; it simply lets what is said stand. Among those who sit before the camera are Elfriede Ahmad, Waltraute Bartel and Hans-Jürgen Eder. Ulrich Seidl’s eighty seven minute Austrian documentary was completed in 2005.
